Ingredients

Notes about the ingredients needed for this Mixed Berry Smoothie recipe are below. Jump to recipe for the exact measurements.

  • Mixed Berries. It’s best to use frozen berries. You can buy already frozen fruit at the store, or freeze fresh fruit. (Check out my guides for freezing fresh strawberries and freezing fresh blueberries at home!)
  • Banana. Using a ripe banana is best because it will give it a sweeter flavor. Make sure to use room temperature bananas so the ingredients can blend together more easily. A frozen banana will require more liquid to smooth things out.
  • Milk. Regular, oat, soy, coconut, or another nut-based milk such as cashew or almond milk can all be used.
  • Yogurt. Any plain flavor will work. Greek yogurt, regular, goat’s milk, or a nut or plant-based yogurt are all great choices. While you can use flavored, like vanilla Greek yogurt, it will add calories and sugar.
  • Sweetener. This is optional. Make the smoothie first and then add in if you would like it sweeter after tasting. Honey and pure maple syrup make great natural sweeteners.

Tip for Super Smooth Smoothies

Use a combination of fresh and frozen fruits to make blending the smoothie together so much easier! You can also thaw previously frozen fruit for 15-30 minutes in order to make it softer and easier to blend.

How to Make a Berry Smoothie?

Please see the recipe card below for more detailed ingredient amounts. Jump to recipe for the printable instructions.

1. Combine ingredients in a blender.

Add all of the smoothie ingredients to a high-powered blender. Place the yogurt and banana closer to the blade and the frozen mixed berries further from the blade. This will ensure everything blends easier.

Be sure to use one that is capable of completely blending up all of the ingredients until they are silky smooth is key! (I use a Vitamix when I’m making more than one smoothie and a Nutribullet when it’s just for me!)

Blending Tip

In order to more easily blend frozen ingredients for a smoothie, you’ll want to place the softer ingredients closer to the blade and the frozen ingredients further away from the blade.

2. Blend until smooth and creamy.

Blend for 1-2 minutes. Look for a smooth and creamy texture.  If it doesn’t seem to be mixing, you might need to add a little more liquid.

This is a basic recipe for you to work with. Bring up the nutritional value by including any of these healthy smoothie add-ins:

  • Leafy greens

Mixed Berry Smoothies are a thick drink enjoyed with berries and fresh lemon zest.

Meal Prepping a Smoothie

If you want to save time on busy mornings, take a few minutes to prep the smoothie ingredients. Add the frozen fruit and yogurt for a single smoothie to a freezer-safe bag. Freeze for up to 3 to 4 months. Just let the ingredients thaw for about 30 minutes before blending them up with your liquid of choice.
