Ingredients
- Bisquick. You can either use a regular or a gluten-free blend from the grocery store. Don’t have Bisquick? Learn how to make your own Homemade Bisquick.
- Garlic powder. This mixes easier into the batter and the garlic butter than fresh. But feel free to use garlic cloves (which I personally like the flavor better!). Just make sure to finely mince the garlic.
- Milk. While whole dairy milk and buttermilk will give you the best results, you can use whatever type you prefer. If using a plant-based alternative just make sure it’s full-fat.
- Cheese. Sharp cheddar cheese will give you the most authentic flavor. But you can sub in another variety if you’d like.
- Seasonings. If you want these to taste like Red Lobster, choose an Italian seasoning blend. Or, stick with just dried basil.
How to Make Cheddar Bay Biscuits with Bisquick
Please see the recipe card below for ingredient amounts and more detailed instructions.
1. Make the Biscuit Batter
In a large bowl, mix together the Bisquick, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, and salt. Stir until everything is evenly distributed.
Carefully pour in the milk, whisked eggs, and butter that has been melted and cooled to room temperature. Use a spatula to stir until a soft dough forms.
Finally, stir in the cheese. Don’t overwork the biscuit dough or they won’t be fluffy.
2. Scoop and Bake
Use a measuring cup or large spoon to scoop about ¼-cup of batter onto a prepared baking sheet lined with parchment paper. You should end up with 12 biscuits.
Bake the biscuits for 14 to 16 minutes in a preheated 375℉ oven. They should be just starting to turn golden brown around the edges.
3. Make the Butter Topping
While the biscuits are in the oven, melt the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter in a small, microwave-safe bowl.
Carefully whisk in the other ½ teaspoon of garlic powder and the Italian seasoning. Set it aside until the biscuits are ready.
4. Top with the Butter and Serve
When the biscuits are just out of the oven, brush the tops with the buttery topping using a pastry brush. This allows the butter to really melt into the biscuits.
Serve the biscuits right away with some fresh parsley.

Notes
- Buy a bag. Bisquick and store-brand varieties are affordable and readily available.
- Just enough. Don’t overwork the batter or the homemade cheddar biscuits will be dense.
- Powder, please. While I almost always recommend fresh garlic, the powdered version works best in this recipe.
- Let it cool. Be sure to let the melted butter come to room temperature before adding it to the batter.
- Don’t skimp. Scoop big servings of the dough before baking for the best results.

Can you use this in chicken and dumplings?
I don’t see why not, Rosemary. It depends on the recipe as you would want one with a drop-style biscuit. Let me know how it turns out!
These look even better than Red Lobster’s and that’s the truth. They look so stinking tasty… and I don’t have to change out of my pajamas to get to them! Perfection!
